How does one make contact with your people in Brazil to shuttle the process through? How much do they charge? Those are key questions.

For someone who speaks Spanish fluently, it is possible to read a simple newspaper article (at the level of Reader's Digest, NY Post, etc … not something highly technical) and understand most of it.
Italian and French are not as close to Portuguese but knowing either language makes learning Portuguese relatively easy.

Does Brazil tax based on residency and not citizenship, such that a citizen/passport holder could live there fewer than X days of the year and not pay taxes?

At a minimum, you would need to be paying taxes to Brazil during the 4 years of claiming residency, yes?

All told, it sounds like a great travel document. But it seems to me with most (all?) of citizenship via residency processes that you would need to pay taxes to the country at some point, such as during your residency period. I'd love if you'd clarify an overview of tax process of transitioning into citizenship via residency (in general for any country).

re:second passports.Does anybody know what has happened to the people at expatworld.com? To all appearances it's a working website, but there is nothing going on there. I guess they are all in jail.

You forgot to mention one important part about Brazilian immigration/citizenship…………..if you marry a Brazilian you may apply for citizenship at the 1 year mark ;)

I really enjoyed the interview of Batista. Very impressive what is going on down there in Brazil. I would like to echo another poster's comment that it would be very helpful if you could touch on the tax issues during residency. I do see that Brazil has a non-resident status that starts 12 months after you leave the country, but while we are qualifying for citizenship, Brazil does have a worldwide tax regime. And they do not have a tax treaty with the US, so it appears US citizens would be liable for double taxation during that 4-5 year residency/citizenship period. Can you please elaborate on this? My family is not particularly wanting to be owing TWO worldwide tax systems. Thanks!

I'm reading sources that say you can get Brazillian citizenship in one year if you have a Brazillian spouse, parent or child. If it's true that any baby born in Brazil is automatically granted Brazillian citizenship, would that mean you can get Brazillian citizenship in one year if you go there and have a baby? How would they feel about granting a travel visa to a 7 month pregnant woman?
