More on BFT...

There are actually "language academies" here that seem to specialize in student visas. They are cheap for the year long or two year long course because students don't actually turn up. Good business for the school too -- they don't need the unnecessary expense of actually paying teachers!

Yes, the whole visa-thing can be quite an irritation. I've chosen to study thai down here, to get a study visa. In theory it can be renewed for up to 10 years - and you don't have to leave the country for visa runs. You just have to study thai at least 3 hours a week to get it, and it's very cheap to study down here. I've chosen to study thai in a private 1-on-1 setting every morning though, because I actually want to learn it. It's quite an easy language, and a lot of fun. So for the person who'd like to stay here for a while it's a very good option. And you can get your thai drivers license when you have it, and all that. Got mine yesterday, it costed me around 100 bath. Long live the king

I think you are right about the current market. I do however think that Pattaya is overpriced for what you are getting relative to Hua Hin which is much nicer and far more "upscale". Malaysia however is probably better for anyone looking for a retirement setup.
