The worst advice I’ve seen in years

When I woke up this morning and scanned through my usual digest– boots on the ground reports from overseas contacts, market summaries from Asian and European bankers, commentary from friends still in the intelligence community– a couple of things caught my eye that I want to tell you about.

Dagong Global Credit Rating Co is China’s leading credit rating agency. Credit rating agencies are the firms who are responsible, among other things, for scoring the credit risk of a particular asset or sovereign nation.

When they rate a security as “AAA”, premium safety, investors pile in. They’re an integral part of the financial system.

You undoubtedly remember that the world’s leading agencies– Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P, were all complicit in slapping AAA premium ratings on so many toxic mortgage-backed securities… and maintaining sound ratings for far too long on bankrupt nations like Greece and Portugal.

The entire industry lacks credibility at this point, and China’s Dagong agency aims to do something about that.

This morning I read Dagong president Guan Jianzhong’s remarks at a recent conference of Asian rating agency CEOs held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (one of my favorite cities).

In his speech, Guan called for the establishment of a global rating agency that follows clearly outlined international standards, effectively putting an end to the cowardly analysis that dominates the industry now and replacing it with a healthy dose of reality.

Putting its money where its mouth is, Dagong has a long-standing, negative outlook on US debt that doesn’t pull any punches. From its November 2010 report:

“In essence the depreciation of the U.S. dollar adopted by the U.S. government indicates that its solvency is on the brink of collapse, therefore it wants to cut its debt through the act of devaluation with the national will; such a move has severely harmed the interests of creditors.”

Following suit, S&P stunned financial markets this morning by revising its US outlook to ‘negative’, citing politicians’ inability to address medium-term and long-term challenges.

In total contrast, US News and World Report published an article a few days ago entitled Why you should buy U.S. Treasuries,” which amounts to the worst advice I’ve seen in years.

FE DA 081124geithner The worst advice Ive seen in years

"Trust me. I'm good for it."

The article is devoid of any clear analysis which could support loaning our hard-earned savings to the most indebted nation in the history of the world in a rapidly depreciating currency at rates which have little chance of keeping up with inflation; instead, the author relies solely on patriotism:

“It has always been a bad idea to bet against America and our ability to prosper even against overwhelming difficulties. America will cut back its spending, innovate, and pay off its debts. We will earn our way out. It’s just how we do it…”

A more accurate statement would have been, “that’s how we used to do it…” Fact is, America’s economic problems are deep-seeded and neither political party can put forth a viable strategy for righting the ship. Even S&P is starting to realize this.

Even worse, it’s not just the politicians that don’t get it. From top to bottom, the culture in government service is an entrenched “me first [at the expense of taxpayers...]” attitude which encourages shortsighted decision making, and in some cases, even fraud.

If you’re still betting on America to come out on top, you’re taking a big risk. America first emerged as a major economic power, not because of government policies or political leadership, but because of the strong incentive that individual Americans had to work hard, take risks, and create value for others.

The incentive isn’t about patriotism… it’s about the benefit of their families and loved ones.

Americans like this still exist, and their desire to see their families and loved ones flourish through enterprise and value creation is as strong as ever. As the economic situation worsens with each passing day, more and more of these value creators look to greener pastures outside of America.

Maybe you should consider the same.

I read that report. Very good and not overblown but to the point. If I had the money I would leave tomorrow as I am irked by the politics of blame and also corruption. The jobs in my city being offered are going all min wage, part-time, and contract. There seems to be so-called growth only in the financial and defense related industries which is unsustainable unless another country is invaded or more surveillance is instituted. I have IT and law plus I’ve worked in hotel and restaurant. So I am thinking that the best would be to work overseas.
On one hand you have the side that wants to cut everything and institute an ownership society that creates a banana republic and the other is a bunch of people who want to institute quotas and regulate the most minute details of your life.
Lastly, Americans myself included are always thinking of the quick solution, profit, or angle. From the so-called leaders to the most average citizen a lot of us don’t think long term. That is why we as a nation are in the mess that we are in. The terrorists whatever that means haven’t done it we collectively have shot our own foot and until we acknowledge realities it will continue to decline.

Any report that questions the solvency of the US gov’t is immediately discredited. It is a technical impossibility for a gov’t with its own currency in a floating exchange rate system to be insolvent.

Given the source of the report (Dagong), I would put just as little faith in it as the US News article.

    • Highwayismyway

Son this country is already insolvent. The next step is hyperinflation. I’d rather have a broke government than hyperinflation any day. When the money loses all respect then you will have no just an insolvent nation but an unusable currency.

    • Anonymous

“wsm” must be a pseudonym for Ben Bernanke…

The mere ability to print paper money does not = solvency.

    Simon,

If I’m sitting on a chunk of cash in a 401k plan for my own company, where should I invest this money? Gold is super high. Silver is high. I don’t have any money invested in the stock market. Any thoughts for a direction?

    • Roger

You need to start viewing gold/silver as a reference point and not a investment/trade. Instead of asking how much money should i invest in gold/silver, you should be asking how many oz. do I own.

    • Perlstar

Pick a day of the month, at random. What day of the month were you born, for instance. Buy the same number of ounces of gold or silver every month, on that day. I call it “ounce-cost averaging”.

      • Perlstar

If you are 59-1/2 years old or unemployed, you can roll-over your 401K (a little at a time, is okay) into an IRA containing gold and silver coins. If you are still employed at that company, you need their permission to do this, but it still might be possible. http://www.apmex.com/ExistingIRA

Every major power in history has fallen. Two of the common factors are overspending and trying to expand the empire too much. Our debt levels are well-documented, and we are currently in 3 wars and have troops in over 150 countries. Any American who think we will be the lone exception is either naive, arrogant, or both.

  • http://profiles.google.com/tienruay Terry Crossman

Now if only Dagong had the courage to call it like it is about the PBOC and the crazy policy driven stimulus that the state banks embarked on in 2008.. heck even taxi drivers from the rural areas around Beijing where I live are beginning to realize that the banks are effectively insolvent and that the terrible inflation we are beginning to see is a result of the PRC govt. kicking the can by not allowing the malinvested economy to right itself as it sorely needs to. May we all live in interesting times ;)

  • Sean

Maybe you shouldnt be a coward and tuck tail and run to another country. I support many of your ideas, but the idea of leaving this country to live and raise my family in another is cowardly. My family literally built this country, so ill fight till the end no matter what.
Tell me who you think will protect you and your freedoms from being imposed on after America falls? Peace and freedom are not the norms. They are the exception. America brought peace and freedom(im not talking about the corrupt people currently holding the reins). These rights only existed as ideas in 1000′s of years of human history. One day down the road, freedom will be looked at as a fond memory. You may be able to save your wealth when you slink your away the border, but you wont be able to save yourself. Remember the Dark Ages? You will

    • A Human Being

…then your ancestors are cowards because they should have stayed where they were from and fought there instead of running over here. COWARDS! STINKING YELLOW-BELLIES

      hahahah, you are a moron.

      • StuckInUK4Now

Fair comment, but perhaps more politely expressed by Rose Wilder Lane: “My attachment to these USA is wholly, entirely, absolutely to The Revolution, the real world revolution, which men began here and which has – so to speak – a foothold on earth here. If reactionaries succeed in destroying the revolutionary structure of social and political human life here, I care no more about this continent than about any other. If I lived long enough I would find and join the revival of the Revolution wherever it might be in Africa or Asia or Europe, the Arctic or Antarctic. And let this country go with all the other regimes that collectivism has wrecked and eliminated since history began. So much for patriotism, mine. “

      • Sean

Really? Us cowards fought and bled for your right to be ignorant. Enjoy it.

    • Anonymous

Sean honey bunch, I got old news for you–Our controllers (politicians) do not work for us. Both parties are actually the same–do the bidding for a special interest group that controls the money (changers- the-chosen ones) for FYI: Our troops are used as modern day’s pirates for resources and keeping the Rothchilds in business. What is really bad for Americans is that they are too stupid to have realised that the 9/II attacks were self inflected and blamed on Arabs (muslims).Think hard, you might be next targeted by your own government–as a big sap.Look around–America is a mess because likes of you–obtuse :^(

      • Sean

I hope you feel as if you have enlightened me. You havent. I know that both parties are corrupt. I know their only objective is to make the population bicker amongst themselves why they push forward their agenda behind the scenes. But, America is a mess because of the likes of you. The likes of me, give you the right to be here, and be ignorant. ;)

If I left the U.S. it wouldn’t be because I was afraid, it would be because I thought things were not going to change for the better – because the majority of People like it like it is and want to keep it that way – that is, the illusion of them on top with the reality of little opportunity for others to experience the small measure of liberty and prosperity the population used to enjoy. I’m looking down the road right now, not “one day” but right now and I don’t see any freedom to be fond of, nothing but privilege and domination by others. “Got your papers!?” submit, obey, all around, pay up. If I left the U.S. it wouldn’t be to save my wealth, it would be to gain some measure of freedom, saving wealth would just be a bonus. I have read the Dark Ages were not bad in many ways and the idea of raising a family here seems kind of irresponsible, especially if it becomes common for People to fight till the end no matter what. How do you fight a devalued currency if you’re not wealthy? I wonder what the least expensive best option is to escape the madness so many People expect to descend upon the nation as those in positions of power try to maintain the status quo or their version of the way things should be.

    • Sean

How do you fight a devalued currency of you’re not wealthy? The key is realizing that money isn’t real. Especially in a fiat world. You can grow your own food, own your own animals, hunt your own meat, catch your own fish, make your own shelter, load up and carry your OWN guns, etc etc etc. Why would you need money then?
As to your last point, this is why we have state militias completely independant of the federal government. The power will return to the states when the federal government collapses. It is already happening. There are good, strong people left who will fight for American exceptionalism. There are less of the strong, than there are of the weak but hey, they’re weak…. Make no mistake about it. The transition will be VERY unpleasant but America will rise again, even if it takes 50 years.
You fail to understand the reality of what will happen in a world without America. Peace and freedom are not the norm, they are the exception. If America were gone, so would be peace and freedom, so run across the border if you wish.
And yes I understand that the people with power in America no longer stand for any of the things I am currently speaking about, but AMERICANS DO, and we the people we’re given the power by the Constitution. The weak will die, but the strong will live on and rebuild.

The article mentioned above has one good advice; buy US bonds for insurance. Truth is that when something goes bad, everybody flocks back to the States. Regarding the patriotic, flagpole in the ass rant, the author has it all wrong. Yes, US always overcame difficulties but they never were difficulties that originated in facility. This society seems very soft.

  • Mario

The lowering of American rating was way to mild. Like a light touch on the cheek, where a harsh whip should have landed. Because of this, we know that ALL the rating agencies, including Dagong, – are lying to us.

Next let us pay attention to their desire to establish the worldwide “ministry of truth”, where they would announce the next direction for all of us sheep to follow. Does this sound as if the Chinese were on the side of the truth? I doubt it! I think what they want is only to be the next superpower of lies, – no way that they are interested in telling me the truth as it is.

The problem with America can not be ever repaired, – the democracy. This is a one way deal, and once the lazy asses are given the power to vote themselves things, there is no way they are going to give that power up.

The democracy insures, that there will be no justice. Without justice, there can be no order. Without order there can not be any investment. And without investment, there can not be any capital accumulation.

So, sing a patriotic song all you want, but keep this in mind: the patriotism is simply a device used to make you die for a king, – it has no purpose outside of this concept. Real matters are decided by real conditions, and those are not ever going to change for the better.

So, no, America is not coming back.

  • Ferrox

“This is a one way deal, and once the lazy asses are given the power to vote themselves things, there is no way they are going to give that power up”
Mr./Ms MARIO – I read your comment and I can understand what you have written, In essence, you underestimate the value, NOT the power, of having a true voice in one’s government-NO, no American would just give it up, no. In fact, sometimes, Simon sounds just like you. he is running all over the world, looking for a safe little nook where his personal fortune will never be touched by ‘…those bad, evil, stinky people who do not act as he thinks they should…’ Simon, every form of refuge has its’ price and people change!
Mario, America is NOT a superpower because it is full of saints and people who never fail, or because it has Nuclear weapons! America’s mistakes are bigger than some countries greatest achievements and their entire national history, oh yeah.
America is a Superpower, the world’s ONLY such power, because its people are SUPER-EMPOWERED…! They believe they can go to the moon, and then they do. They want to solve not only their own problems but they want to lead the world in doing it and do everything better than anyone else – and there again, leaves them open to astounding success and extraordinary folly! History reveals NO NATION or kingdom, no idea, or system of values that does not get something wrong on its way to being whatever.
    Humans progress by fault.
Presently China is almost a capitalist nation (Tiananmen square), the soviet union is extinct, and the Muslim world is on fire with the desire for the right to vote, they would love to have America’s problems if they could have America’s POSSIBILITIES! They all, ALL want to be super empowered, too.
The US MUST solve its’ problems, America has many problems to solve, but fearing tomorrow? NOPE! It is STILL the land of the Free and Home of the Brave..not many other nations in history can say that!

silly response, you obviously have not been paying attention. Gasoliine isn’t running $5 a gallon because the oil is more expensive to extract or transport or because the evil gas station attendants are gouging us, it is priced in US dollars and the oil producers of the world see the devaluation of the dollar.

The US government is not the embodiment of all these wonderful traits you assign to America, it is the citizens that carry these values and provide the strength for us to be a super power. The government is destroying itself with every greenback printed but you still want to be their cheerleader ?

      • ferrox

Yes, it is…and all the bad ones too! Wherever you go in this world, that OIL will be priced in something, and if you live long enough, the price will be RIGHT BACK where you do not want it to be.
No one can have their cake and eat it too…including me …including you…yes, the people of america carry great virtue and pitiful small visions, they ARE human. They hate government, their government but LOVE what it can buy!
Stop running away ‘Bob’ and run for office in the US if you can. Once in power you will see differently. You will have to solve problems and meet demands. These same selfish demands and these same great SUPER EMPOWERED people.
