Excellent post. No political grandstanding, no gold bug nonsense. Just great "boots on the ground" observations that attracted people like me to your site in the beginning. Thanks for the interesting information.

I've read, with much interest, your opinions of Panama over the last two days. I have been to Panama twice, once with my then 12 year old daughter, and then 16 year old niece. Theirs, and both of my trips there where awesome. From the disposition of the populace, to the geography I can't say enough about the country.
I made the two 1o day trips to get a feel for what it would be like to "retire" there. I decided I could be happy there.
Now I have a 9 day trip with my 16 year old-on 6/29-daughter to Costa Rica. I will be spending much time in the SW coast of Costa Rica to consider the " Pacific Lots" development.
Do you have any information on this development you can offer? Your opinion on this part of Costa Rica, and the prospects of owning property there would be very much appreciated!!

From what I've read on the Panamian laws, you can be an owner of a business, but the employees must be Panamian citizens. And if you do any of the work involved, your business can be shut down - for instance, I heard about restaurant owner who was caught bussing the tables in his restaurant on a busy day, and some visiting inspectors decided that was against the law, so he had to pay huge fines and I think closed the restaurant.

I also have been searching for info regarding self-employment for individuals who offer services (such as backoffice assistance) on a temporary/contract basis, but haven't yet found what their laws (restrictions) state on this.

Hi Simon,
I've been following your newsletter for a while and I must say it's simply exceptional. I'm a high school senior and I'm about to make a college choice. I hope to be able to become a permanent tourist and an entrepreneur. Your letter is geared more towards the real estate world and so I was wondering: do you think an electronics or computer engineer can become a successful permanent tourist? What career paths would you advice to facilitate a permanent tourist life?
