It’s all about who you know…

by Simon Black · 217 comments

Apparently I’ve been traveling too much, because I was recently caught out of the loop.

On Wednesday I published an article about Panama’s Resolution 52; the law effectively makes it illegal for landlords to rent property in Panama for less than 1-year.

I predicted in the letter that, based on the past track record of Panama’s National Assembly, the law would be repealed shortly due to significant pressure from the real estate industry and expat community in Panama.

Well, it turns out that I was simultaneously entirely right, and entirely wrong.  By the time my letter was published, Resolution 52 had already been repealed.  Crisis averted.

I found out about it thanks to Augusto, my very dedicated Panamanian attorney.  Even though he was somewhere shy of the 14th green at the time, Augusto somehow managed to read my letter and instantly correct my mistake with the following email:

“Your article is completely wrong. Resolution 52 was already revoked by Resolution 79.”

Did I mention he’s blunt too?

Frankly I couldn’t ask for a better attorney; I have burned through dozens of lawyers in Panama over the years, and Augusto is truly among the best in the business. He has literally saved me tens of thousands of dollars by steering me away from the wrong deals and connecting me with the right people to profit with.

Augusto’s example underscores and incredibly important point: a key element to success in many ventures lies in who you know.  The ability to leverage contacts to make things happen often makes the difference between a home run and a strike out.

I believe in this principle so much that I try to make it a core theme of this letter.

Last month, for example, I published my Panama Black Paper.  It was essentially my personal rolodex of high-level contacts in Panama– lawyers, bankers, real estate agents, gold dealers, etc. whom I trust and have dealt with in the past.

The idea behind the Black Paper was to provide people who are serious about living, investing, or doing business in Panama with a well-connected network of influential individuals who are trustworthy and highly competent.

All of my most profitable deals, most important relationships, and the best experiences have all come to me because of who I knew– my network.  I know it’s cliché, but it’s the truth.  “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”.

It’s also true that you can dramatically expand your opportunities and experiences if you know how to grow your network; there’s an art to doing it, and it’s something that I’ve been successful with in the past.

For example, when I was working in the intelligence business, infiltrating networks was part of the job description.  Now I use the same tactics to walk in to a foreign country and make a big splash with the upper ranks in a short period of time.

There’s no mystery to doing this, it’s a question of process and persistence… and sometimes even paying to be in the room.

Do you want better investment returns? Become friends with the people who have it mastered. Do you want to make a lot of money? Get networked with talented entrepreneurs and deal makers.  Do you want to meet beautiful models? Get close to photographers and fashion designers.

Once you understand the strategy and tactics involved in building a new network, you’ll be able to immediately change the scope of opportunities in your life, solve problems, and create deep, rich relationships with the kind of people you want to associate with.

I’m thinking of writing a free report about how to generate goodwill, build contacts, and penetrate any network.   This isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking to take your available opportunities and experiences to the next level, “who you know” can make all the difference.

If you’re interested in this information let me know in the comments below.   The more requests I receive, the higher priority this free report will be.

UPDATE: The report is done. If you are interested in receiving it, sign up for our free daily e-letter, Notes from the Field, and you’ll receive a copy.  (Scroll back to the top of the page and enter your info in the box.)

The report on generating goodwill and building contacts would be of more value than most people would know. Please proceed.

  • Robert Mitre

    Simon,

In my opinion a workup on how to build a network is even more critical today as we find more business and investment opportunities being generated outside of the us. I look forward to your report on this subject.

    Thanks,

    Robert Mitre

    Simon,
I immensely enjoy your column, the information you provide, and the can-do spirit in which you write it. Yes, as an offshore IFA/wealth counselor based in Japan, with investment connections in the Philippines and Australia, I am most interested in “taking my available opportunities and experiences to the next level”. I too think the Philippines is ripe with opportunities if you know where to look and who to deal with.
    Cheers,
    Peter

I’m sure this is not another “Dale Carnegie” course!? Considering your bckgroundit should prove to be interesting reading and I would hope useful.

  • Barbara Lynn Lewis

Please give your project on how to generate goodwill, build contacts and penetrate any network your highest priority. These skills are the most important to my own as well as most network marketting businesses. I will be most appreciative of your efforts. And please ensure that I am on your distribution list.
Thank you very much for your daily commentaries. I enjoy your perspectives and informed suggestions.

The free report on networking strategies is a great idea. I hope you’ll make it a priority.

  • Nick

Most definately eagerly awaiting your report on networking tomorrow…
    Or the next day??

  • Jason

You should write the free report so that I may benefit from your vast expertise in schmoozing technique. Don’t take that as anything other than a joke from a perpetual non-serious person (I know that is probably a poor trait and won’t get me far (It hasn’t been particularly successful (I just can’t help myself))). I do appreciate your daily thoughts however. I have learned much. Cheers!

  • jeff

As someone who has started and is growing a real estate investing business, I have learned that network is the key. As I was taught, your network = your net worth. At the outset, I struggled with networking as I was not familiar with it. It has gotten better but I know it could still be better yet. I await your report.

  • Mark

    Simon,
How to generate goodwill, build contacts, and penetrate any network would be valuable information for any ambitious person in any field. With your background, I you have some unique insights beyond the NLP “gain rapport” model. I hope you do it!

  • ksal

Would love to see more info on that.
    Thanks Simon

  • Gioia P. Ambrette

Please do the report. It is indeed about who you know and the quality of thoes relationships.

  • John

I think a report on building contacts would be great. My personal interest would be a network of interesting people, especially beautiful – well off women in their 20′s-30′s with high self esteem. Many of the models look good but so many have low self esteem that leads to unacceptable behaviors and lifestyles. Good looking but low self esteem women usually make lousy lovers as well. Daddy’s girls are way better than damaged girls.

I prefer to associate with women and men who have their act together and enjoy the good things in life without the self destructive and negative behavior. I’m interested in the kind of people who are into health and fun and a good party and have the resources to do it. For example, first class surf trips, ski trips, travel, etc.

Perhaps charity events or country clubs would be a place to meet them – not sure. These people are out there and I bet you have some insight on how to penetrate those networks. I’m not interested in meeting them to take anything but to share good times with people on the same level.

    Thanks Simon!

I’d love to here about how you infiltrate a new network. I was in the hallway at the LasVegas Casey seminar and you were talking a little about that same subject. Again I’d love to get more details. Dean

Sounds like a great report. I’ll be waiting for it!

Simon – great idea for a report. As we move more deeply into the crisis, it would be useful for having to make quick exits and land on new shores!

I am interested in the ability to quickly build contact in new locations – be it in new cities across the U.S. or in new countries where I may be visiting, investing, or considering something more permanent. Thanks.

Looking forward to your networking report.
Also think your readership is a great core group for each other. Everyone has common interests and are savvy in their own regard. Perhaps a forum for all to interact would be beneficial. This way you wouldn’t have to scrub direct emails and could hop on opportunities that looked interesting.
    Just a though.
Thanks for the work. It’s great perspective.

    • Marquelle

      I second the idea of a forum…

  • Tom Klein

    Would be interested.

Many years ago the department chair of one America’s leading business schools visited our organization and the “gem” I best remembered and have most often called upon was “Develop a trusted relationship with people with access – you will then be abale to access all their trusted colleagues through them”. Proof in point, during the past Presidential cabinet a man I met was on first name basis with two of Persident Bush’s cabinet members. Through this man many ideas flowed upward regarding improvements for the delivery of healrthcare to a much broader cross section of A,merica.

Simon, very interested in further take on building contacts and penetrating networks. Great newsletter!

  • Alex Cabana

Would like a contact list for the Philippines. However, thanks for the Panama information. Panama’s a great country. Easy for Americans to move to. But best of all it’s below the hurricane belt with great medical facilities such as a Johns Hopkins hospital. The best part: Casca Viejo section of Panama City. Feels like old Havana but with property rights. Panama’s a great place to have an internet business because many of the natives are bilingual. Cheers to all.

    Greetings Simon,
Thank you for another valuable letter. Please count me in any future networking assistance you may provide. Hi travel Simon

You don’t believe it.. but every day when I’m opening my mail the first mail is yours. And this even before I read any from Doug Casey and all his reports, which I’m subscribed to.
Because your report are short but still with a lot of information…every day different and still very interesting.
Maybe because I’m as well working abroad for power plants commissioning on a yearly basis and I can imagen what you are experiencing….
Surely I would like to know how you are moving around in the different circles therefore please tell us more..

    cheers and keep going

    Simon:

I’d be very interested in finding out your secrets on how to network. As an ex-spook, you would have benefited from the finest training in the world on how to do that. I’ve always been puzzled at how you are able to breeze into a new capital, and meet with some of the highest in the land. So yes – I’d certainly welcome a report on the tricks of the trade.

  • Christine

I’ll chime in with the chorus.

In one’s home country, you can ask around to learn which people tend to be reputable, but even then it can be hit or miss.

But in another country, where you don’t know anyone, aren’t familiar with the culture, and have to cross the language barrier, building a network must be difficult indeed. I’d be very interested in how you sort the wheat from the chaff, without having to learn from the school of hard knocks. It’s tough enough speaking spotty Spanish and trying to strike up a conversation with a girl at the clubs on Calle Uruguay, without them thinking you’re a foreigner looking to pick up a call girl.

  • Richard

    Absolutely interested.

  • Roberto

    Hello Simon,

  • Expat in Asia

Simon, I’m definitely interested in leveraging my networking skills. Let me know when this report comes out!

  • Bob Hays

I am convinced that networks are going to be ever more important. I see them as not only ways to open opportunities, but ways to build a social “tribe” of folks with common interests and values to get through tough economic times.

FWIW, I once new an American immigrant who had grown up under the Nazis, and been pulled into the Waffen SS just before the end of the war. He subsequently survived the post-war depression there, then emigrated to Chile. But with the rise of Allende, he fled again taking his family to the US with help of some academics where he joined a college faculty. I worked with him there. Over a few stiff drinks one night he told me the whole story, and his bottom line. Under the several seemingly diverse cultures he’d lived in, there was a strong common current. It was the social networks that drove them all. Yes, how the game was played differed. The game within the college didn’t use hosting social events over dinner like it did in Santiago, but there was always a way of giving and getting favours.

But knowing the value of networking does not tell you how to do it, and that is certainly one of my weak points. Bring it on.

Bob of NZ, now in NM, and soon off to Panama

  • http://www.lospozospanama.com js

    Simon,

“It’ all who you know” is Panama’s Motto. If you plan on being here, learn it. I recently attended the First Lady’s dinner event on Thurs and was speaking with a high ranking official regarding the OECD and US bases that appear to be coming soon to Panama. I had asked him if there was any correlation between Panama holding out on signing any agreements with the OECD and these newly agreed on bases. Seems the timing of it all is suspect. “Interesting, I hadn’t put them together. I’m meeting will the *&*%*% to the US early next week and I will ask them as well as my colleagues if they know anything. I’ll let you know what I hear.” If anything comes of it I’ll post it here.

Great stuff as always Simon. For those of us living in Panama, you’re a great resource.

    Best,

    JS

  • Terri

My husband and I would definitely be interested in this information. We have said the same thing for years, but we have no idea how to meet and make the contacts you are talking about. This would be such a blessing!! I hope you do the article, we would appreciate it very much!

    Thanks!

  • Klaas Tadema

Also intersted in your report. Excellent blog, keep it up!!!

  • John Seguin

Simon, you are the man in talking about who you know. I am trying to sell my place here in Canada so I can afford to relocate to Panama when ever that happens. I coul’d afford your black paper on Panama but would really be interested in this new list you are putting together.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated, some day we will meet. Thanks

  • Rich

I am very interested in your network letter. ‘Who you know’ is one of the most important concepts available to anyone. I would hope you will make it a generic type course rather than just information fro one country. Knowing the techniques to find the ‘who’s’ is much more important than knowing the ‘who’ in a given country or situation. Thank You!

Simon, I too would like to receive your letter.

I would also like to invite you to come to Boquete on November 8th to our opening night for the Boquete Comunity Players. Let me know if you would like to bring a guest so that I can get the extra ticket.

My guests will include some people that you may not know, but might like to. If you would like to stay the night, let me know and I will make
a reservation for you. (I am building a home and my situation is not comfortable for guests right now.)l

If you have never been here, I can assure you that it is a nice quaint
    area with wonderful people.

Our program will be musical. We will have Panamanian performers and
Anglo performers. (Ana Elise will be one of them.)

My business is GrayRiver Farms which we are developing into a passion fruit and other food products business. We also have the best water pumps in Panama’ and supply the IDAAN with many of their pumps. I am also starting Bambu’ Panama’ which will process bamboo for lots of
    projects that normally use wood.

This end of the country is brimming with potential for all kinds of business. Come look us over.

    Regards,
    BG.
