Yes, I would be interested. We visit Panama in a week or so and will start to check out our bullion storage options. Insurance, 24/7 access and security head our list of concerns.

    Simon,

One thing that would concern me is the risk of what happened in Britain. Armed thugs with badges raiding a private storage facility and confiscating ALL boxes just because there happen to be a few clients who are outside the law using that facility.

    Roger

Simon, what Panama bank can you safely recommend to handle about $10M?
Thanks for the daily updates of our travels.

I was wondering, can you teach me how to travel? I mean how the best way to fly. (best airlines, best way to get around, pack, credit cards to use. I think you fly yourself or use airlines? I think this would be invaluable to your clients…thanks

    Simon,

I would definitely be interested in a secure storage facility for gold
    coins or bouillon in Panama.

Also interested in investment property, etc. that can yield over 6 %, do
you have any suggestions. It can be located mostly anywhere. I just
saw one in Buenos Aires, apartment/hotel, just don’t know the people
and have not had a chance to know who best to check them out.

    Thanks,

I was planning on opening a safety deposit box with Banvivienda when they move to thier new office later this year. However, I prefer to have the box somewhere not associated with my declared bank account. I did not do this because of the difficulty of getting into a new bank, which would probably require me to have an account with a minimum balance. It is all a hassle. So, I would be interested in a simpler sulution.

Storage would interest me personally as I’ve visited the wonderful country of Panama and would like to return again. Keep us updated

  • Omar

    Hey Simon,
Yes, I would be interested in getting more info on this storage facility.

Also, in one of your previous messages, you asked for names of contacts in Panama who performed and who did not perform. One guy that was recommended to me (by someone in Canada) to set up some vehicles and accounts did not perform at all. His name is Norbert Stocker at Investing Pacific. He never took any responsibility for his actions and I lost a year of starting a new business and I still don’t have the bank accounts I paid for. I would avoid him at all costs.

If you ever come through Mexico (I’m in San Miguel de Allende), I’d be delighted to break break with you over some hummus.
    Best,
    Omar

Hi Simon. Why would you want to re-invent the wheel and go through the hassle of setting up an offshore bullion storage facility when such Facilities already exist and have had many years of experience (eg. Goldmoney.com, e-Gold, etc)? It looks to me that Panama is already falling under the thumb of the US Government, exactly as predicted.

    Hi, Simon

This has been one of my biggest challenges to sort out. I’m in Canada, sold my home and am thinking of moving to Costa Rica or Panama. I have been struggling with what to do with my money, how to get it out of the country, whether I should leave some in Canada, whether it’s safe to buy and store bullion in C America. The stakes are very high and I don’t want to screw it up.

A safe bullion storage facility would be a good idea and it would become more popular as the months go by. However, I think major concerns would be how fast it can be ready and how to make it secure enough to keep out desperate thieves and government/military.

    Take care,

    Pete

  • marty

Simon. would be very interested in storage facility in Panama. Also do you have any contacts in Italy for second citizenship and fees involved. thanks keep up the good work.

  • David

I have been very interested in the idea of a safe-deposit box in Panama. But, hearing recently about 300 heavily armed police showing up to confiscate the contents of 3500 boxes in the UK has given me pause. This can happen anywhere.

  • David S Brown

    Hello Simon,
Banks in Panama that have “voluntarily” followed an unstated order are indicators. Look for countries with less reguard for the political winds of change.
The Daniels family of Australia has set up Warehouse facilities in locations that are way out of the way. They had even looked at Panama and turned it down.
You would find a converstation with Graham Daniels of great interest to you.

  • Roy Lum

    Simon,

Private offshore bullion storage is of interest to me. Uruguay preferred, but Panama works too. Are there reliable ways to purchase bullion coins offshore or would you recommend buying bullion in U.S. and shipping to offshore storage?

Simon, with your connections, it seems to me that it would be a great business opportunity (given the present economic conditions) for you to start-up and offer a complete service – buy/sell bullion and provide secure private storage. Making this easily accessible to U.S. citizens should be a winner. Not sure what legal issues you might encounter though.

I like Michael Maloney’s business model. He’s a gold & silver dealer (goldsilver.com) and works with Brinks for non-bank storage. The only disadvantage is Brinks is located within the U.S. Maybe you can work a deal with Maloney to provide offshore storage for his clients?

In my opinion. I think their is great possibilities in Panama with “offshore secure storage,” just as long as one can locate the right sources. I think that only time will tell!

Have been planning to establish myself and wife in Panama and was assuming an available safety deposit box in a local bank – private works. However, I still hadn’t thought/read of a way to get my ‘stuff’ transferred to Panama – stuff in a bank safety deposit box in the US doesn’t travel easily……figuring that out would be a real service.

I’m interesting in bullion storage in Panama.

    Simon:
I don’t get it. If HSBC has announced they are getting out of the business of storing personal account precious metals in the USA (as for IRAs through GoldStar Trust that will be stored at Delaware Depository) and it is confirmed, then what is going on?

If Panama makes it difficult for Americans, I can understand that. But why is HSBC leaving the business of storing metals for individuals?
The only obvious reason to me is that they want the storage space for larger requirements of institutions. China and Russia are notable for stocking up on gold over the past months. So it would seem resonable that others ‘in the know’ would do the same. And the individual will get squeezed out.

Could you explain your view as to the ‘why’ of HSBC’s move?

    Hi

Just read your article on Panama. Wnet for a visit, researched most of the information you mentioned. I’m poor trying to create capital thruogh an offshore corp. Found out Banco General was the most inhospitable. They wouldn’t even give me the paperwork for a savings account application. Noticed a lot of foreign presence. Very little or low profile american presence. Which was disheartening in lieu of the improving business environment. Primarily the canal expansion. I looked at the old Howard AFB. They are developing a major industrial center. The project is called, : The Panama Pacifico Project. Recommend you review it as a possible future site. My field is Aviation saw plenty of opportunity. Unfortunately Singapore aerospace already has a lease on all of the aircraft Hagars, in short they have a monopoly on the Aircraft Maint and Mod market, in the area. But for your plans It’s an open market. Here’s a contact at Howard.

The real estate developer is London Regional.

Like I said most of the contractors are of European Asian or South American entities. We have been left out.

Hope this info is helpful. I’d like to feel that, I’ve help a little. You definitely have informed me. Thanks again. I acquired a little more info, you have my e mail address any questions, feel free to send an e mail

    Hello Simon,

Which countries allow financial sanctuary for U.S. Nationals, without excessive usury and stipulation from U.S. enforced monetary policy? You mentioned Hong Kong, which we discovered 4 months ago that the Hong Kong Banks have accepted to enforce rules of disclosure allowing the FBI, CIA and any Federal agency to review deposits by U.S. Nationals. The Hong Kong Banks are notified to hold such deposits until such time the U.S. agency counterparts investigate the background of U.S. depositors. Privacy is no longer the policy in Hong Kong, who is complicit with U.S. Monetary Policy.

Safe storage facilities in Panama are of definite interest.

I would keep it completely separate from (a) banks and (b) any kind of bullion dealership. Putting everything in one place might make things easier for us, but it makes things much easier for anyone with bad intentions too (I’m thinking primarily government of course) There is always a price to pay for convenience.

Regarding risk of seizure etc, it’s important to realize that nothing in life is risk free and we just have to go about minimizing risk as best we can so we can sleep better at nights. That is exactly the reason why storage in Panama is interesting. We have storage in other countries and need to diversify our portfolios geographically. Nobody should put ALL their assets in Panama nor any other country. The PT way is to spread risk across countries and continents.

@Doug: no, you have fundamentally misunderstood what we are talking about here. We are talking about a place to store bullion, as in gold bars and coins. Goldmoney and e-gold are repositories of electrons that depend on the financial system, much like Gold ETFs. I used to recommend them some years ago but really cannot any longer given how desperate things have become, and especially what happened with e-gol (US money laundering charges) Goldmoney is much better managed but Jersey is completely under the thumb of the UK, exactly where the govt thugs with badges went into the safe deposit boxes, so I certainly wouldn’t trust Jersey.

I will be in Panama much of August. Would be great to meet up Simon.

  • wwbrown

Simon, I would be very interested in bullion storage in Panama, however, 1% to 2% per year would be too rich for my blood. At that price, I will take my chances with the Perth Mint (unallocated).

Also, how many millions do my wife and I need to save to quit our jobs and travel as you do. I can barely afford a trip to Italy once every 3 years to stay with friends.

    Keep the interesting letters coming.

Hello Simon, What about the Perth Mint in Australia? They have a long history of dependability.

The Panama storage facility sounds great, but how can a US citizen transport their coins to said facility without being stopped by TSA at the airport? I know…I know….if you fill out the required form you should be able to take the coins out of the country, but the likelihood of being stopped is a very real one. The additional likelihood of the coins being confiscated by the TSA is also totally possible especially if your answers to their obnoxious and intrusive questions are not the “correct” answers. What’s a poor US citizen to do these days? We are becoming the undesirables of the world.

Some US folks I know are selling their gold coins, converting them to cash, and then purchasing a Perth Mint Certificate. Sounds like an extreme measure, but I guess it’s better than having one’s coins confiscated by the US government.

  • Michael

I travel to Panama regularly, and would love to have the option of a private facility.

  • Scott

I’d certainly be interested if you started up a private secure facility in Panama, and was disappointed when you had dropped the idea. Panamanian banks willing to rent boxes to Americans have been droppin’ like flies. Advantages I see in an effort by you would be that the facility would presumably not require the references & paper-shuffling required by the banks, and that as a non-bank facility, it could hopefully escape the dragnet in the event that the US govt bullies Panamanian banks into disclosing/rejecting American customers. A disadvantage I see is that, as a small facility, it may not have the resources that the banks have in providing security and might be vulnerable to determined armed robbers. I’d be very interested in hearing whatever you come up with … and I’d definately be receptive to an anonymous box scheme.

  • Salli Skinner-Meacham

How would the contents of the storage facility be moved quickly if needed. What if it were illegal to take it out of Panama. I hear that Costa Rica had already bent to the demands of the US when it comes to Pensionado or other retirement status. What is to prevent Panama from doing the same thing. The arm of the US Gov’t has long and many tentacles. I will admit I don’t hear much about either country in comparison to all the other hot spots. I am not sure if this is good or bad.

  • http://goldchat.blogspot.com/ Bron Suchecki

One should never put all their bullion in one location. With the Perth Mint, it is a conservative organisation and all unallocated is 100% backed, your risk their is Government confiscation in times of trouble. For those interested, I’ve done an analysis of the issue from an Australian perspective and specially Western Australia: http://goldchat.blogspot.com/2008/11/australian-gold-confiscation.html

Just looking at old epistles. Two questions re Panama

How do you get around the fact that the Constitution of Panama says that dual citizenship is available only for those born in Panama but not for immigrants. Are you assuming that a US citizen will give up his US citizenship if (s)he goes for a Panama passport? Quite a few Panamanian attorneys have led gringos to believe that dual citizenship for them is legal in Panama. One has revised her claims I understand but she also originally gave out false (perhaps she didn’t know, amazing as it may seem) information.

Can anyone give me their opinion of “Lines Overseas Management” (LOM) based in Bermuda with branches in UK, Bahamas and Caymans. They sell physical gold (coins or bars) and will store it physically for you. The advantage with them is that, on request, they’ll convert the gold to any currency and wire it to anywhere in the world.

As a formerly business owner in HK (1988-1995) I remember when Midland in England bought HK-Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). Is it such a stretch to figure out that HSBC (Midland Bank) is cooperating with Uncle Sam? They even have a huge dis-assemblable relocatable building in downtown HK just 2 blocks from the harbour. Check it out. Ron Buice, Plano, Texas
