Unrestricted: Any child born in the country automatically becomes a citizen. (Restrictions apply to people born in American Samoa.)All 5 years must spend as Green Card holder - an equivalent of a permanent residency. Many residency types start with a Green Card right away.US citizenship passes to a child born abroad in the following cases:
- If both parents are US citizens: At least one of the parents has been a resident of the US before the child’s birth. (No specific period of residence is required.)
- If only one parent is a US citizen: A US citizen parent has been physically present in the US for 5 years before a child’s birth. Additionally, the parent must have spent at least 2 of these 5 years in the US after turning 14.Must be both married and reside in the country for 3 years.
