If you are looking for a second passport, citizenship by investment is by far the fastest way to get one.
Citizenship by investment is exactly what it sounds like: foreigners invest a certain sum of money in a country in exchange for citizenship and a passport.
Depending on the country, the investment amount can vary from just over $100,000 (St Lucia and Dominica) to over $2.5 million (Cyprus), plus applicable processing and due diligence fees.
However, you’ve got to be careful– some of these shortcuts are MUCH better than others.
Whether you’re parting with a couple hundred thousand or a couple million dollars, you need to know exactly what you’re getting into.
For example, although these programs are collectively referred to as “investments”, in many cases you will not actually get your investment amount back.
It’s more accurate to refer to these programs as “citizenship by donation.” In other cases, however, you can get some or most of your money back and potentially even generate an investment return.
Some countries offer passports that allow visa-free travel to a few dozen countries, which excludes North America, Europe, Australia, etc.
But others are good for visa-free travel to over 150 countries and include nearly all of the developed nations, ranking them among the highest quality passports in the world.
However, if you are in a rush, citizenship by investment is by far the fastest ways to obtain a second passport.
Often times, you can get one in less than six months.
In the Caribbean for example, you can obtain a passport from St. Lucia in five months in exchange for a one-time donation of $119,600 – which makes it one of the best options out there for single applicants.
For families, Antigua & Barbuda will grant a second passport to an entire family of four in five months, for a donation of $151,200 – making it one of the best value options for families looking for a fast second passport.
Both of these are decent passports and rank 82 and 76 respectively on the Sovereign Man Passport Index.
If you have substantially more funds to invest, you could take a look at citizenship by investment programs in Europe. They offer some of the best passports in the world.
The fastest citizenship by investment program in Europe is that of Cyprus, which will grant you citizenship in exchange for a $2.4M investment (most of which you can actually get back).
It is one of the most popular programs in the world and will award applicants who meet their requirements a new passport in just 8 months (including 6 months of residency in the country).
A Cypriote passport is a good passport that gives you access to Schengen, Canada and the UK – but not the US.
However, if you have a little more time on your hands, we think Malta offers a much better value passport.
In exchange for a $982,000 donation (of which you will get roughly $165,000 back), Malta will grant you citizenship after 15 months.
A Maltese passport gives you unfettered access to all of the European Union and is one of the best in the world. It ranks 24 on the Sovereign Man Passport Index.
On top of that Malta, along with St. Lucia and Antigua, do not require that you spend any significant time in the country. You will simply need to visit the country to pick up your passport (and on certain occasions, process your application).
But if you don’t have $100,000 or more to invest in a second passport, there are other fast and cheap ways to get citizenship abroad.
These simply require that you spend some time in the country or are flexible with your life.

Brazil is one of the most interesting options for people who are willing to step outside of the mainstream.
It’s definitely not for everyone, but it costs next to nothing and you’ll be eligible to apply for a second passport after just ONE year of residency.
To get a fast Brazilian second passport and citizenship you’ll have to have a baby there.
You can do this because Brazil is one of the rare countries that grants citizenship not only to babies born in the country – but also to their parents.
The process isn’t immediate. After your child is born in Brazil, you and your spouse can apply for “residency of indefinite term”, which grants you the right to live and work in Brazil.
But after just one year of residency, you can apply for citizenship.
The naturalization process takes a few months to a year and requires that you speak some Portuguese. But in a total of fewer than two years, you can have a baby in Brazil and have your entire family naturalized as Brazilian citizens.
That’s incredibly fast by any international standards – and doesn’t cost upwards of $150,000 as it does in Antigua for the whole family (application fees with a reputable lawyer cost just a couple of thousand dollars).
Plus, a Brazilian passport is a solid travel document.
Brazilian citizens enjoy visa-free travel to 147 countries, including Europe’s Schengen area – the 26-country free trading and passport-free bloc – and the United Kingdom.
And Brazilian citizens become members of Mercosur – a free trading union of countries in the region (including Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay) – that makes it easy for citizens of member countries to move and live there.

But if you’re not ready to have a baby, there’s another Latin American country that offers one of the fastest and easiest ways to get a second passport in the world today…
For those who are willing to move abroad for part of the year, Argentina offers one of the fastest ways to obtain a second passport in the world today without having to invest a lot of money.
In fact, the application costs just a few thousand dollars if you chose to do it with an attorney.
And the naturalization process is stunningly fast.
Yes, you will need to actually obtain residency in Argentina and spend at least six months per year there.
But there are worse places to spend six months per year. Argentina, especially outside of Buenos Aires, is an incredibly beautiful place – and the lifestyle is world-class. It’s also cheap for holders of foreign currency.
So consider Argentina if you want to enjoy fine wine and great steak while you wait out for your citizenship to be processed.
And that’s where it gets interesting. After obtaining residency in Argentina, you can qualify for full citizenship after only TWO years of living there (plus processing time for the naturalization of at least another year).
That’s three years in total and incredibly fast by international standards.
In comparison most countries require at least five years of residency before you become eligible for naturalization.
Argentina’s passport is also a pretty solid travel document, with visa-free access to more than 150 countries– including all of Europe. The only major drawback is that an Argentinian passport does not give you visa-free access to the US or Canada.

Getting residency in Argentina is pretty easy. The official requirement is that you show a minimum of $1,000/month in passive income to be eligible, but our lawyers recommend showing $2,000 or more.
What kind of income qualifies?
If you have steady, passive income, you could qualify for a rentista visa, which is a one-year visa that can be extended in one-year increments. You’d need to set up an Argentine bank account and have the money deposited there monthly.
If this option appeals to you, it’s best to start the process on the ground in Argentina, and not at a consulate in your home country, which could quickly become a bureaucratic mess. Once you’ve got your temporary visa/residency, then you’ll need to start spending time in Argentina.
You will need to spend at least six months per year there over the course of those two years.
At that point, you may apply for naturalization. You will need a bit of Spanish language proficiency, but the exam is easy enough to pass without full fluency.
