Building trusted networks

Dallas, Texas, USA

It’s true that no one is an island. The concept of a community is one of the basic building blocks of the human experience, and we have been building communities since we first walked the earth.

Traditionally, human beings formed families, and families became tribes. These were large collectives based on common factors like geography, DNA, and eventually languages and core values.

Over time, tribes grew into kingdoms and empires, and the common factors which tied people together became increasingly blurred. Today, kingdoms and empires have become nation-states… and the common factors which bind us together are rather limited.

Sure, we might look alike, talk alike, dress alike, and hail from the same postal code or some other invisible lines on a map, but shared core values are a thing of the past.

In my own experience, I’ve found that I have very little in common with the people who share the color of my passport, and that I have much more in common with those I’ve met around the world who share my outlook and philosophy.

Moreover, this trusted network of individuals around the world, wherever they happen to be based, has often made the difference between success and failure in my life.

As we go through the Age of Turmoil and experiences rapid change and fluctuating crises, I think that having a trusted network will become even more important. The cliche ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,’ is absolutely true… perhaps more so in difficult times.

Lately, I’ve written extensively about why becoming self-reliant is ultimately the way to survive and thrive in the Age of Turmoil… and this is absolutely true. But as ironic as it may sound, I think that building a trusted network is one of the key pillars to achieving self-reliance.

Let me begin by saying that there is a critical difference between building a trusted network, and expecting others to take care of you. The former is a position of strength, the latter is a position of weakness. If you build a network where you are a valued member of the team, you are an asset, not a liability.

Developing valuable relationships with like-minded people is immensely rewarding, both personally and professionally. Human beings are naturally social creatures, and like it or not, we are all going to need help someday. Likewise, other people are going to need ours.

It’s much easier to face the world, particularly in the Age of Turmoil, knowing that the people on your team are a carefully selected group of dependable men and women who share your core values and have important skills.

Technology has made it possible for us to reject the old system of identifying through DNA and geography; we can now congregate digitally in online communities, or in person at various expat havens or resilient communities, based on complementary skills, philosophy, and core values.

One of my primary goals is to facilitate people making connections based on shared values; I plan on making this a major priority for our upcoming premium service, which we’re calling Sovereign Man: Confidential.

We’ve settled on the retail price of $395, but initially, we’re going to make it available to charter members for just $277/year. The reason we’re discounting it so much is two-fold:

1. One of the many features of Sovereign Man: Confidential is its membership community. Over time, this community will become incredibly valuable as it gives each of us the opportunity to meet, build relationships, collaborate on projects, and share experiences.

Immediately after the launch, though, the community will be brand new, and I’m going to count on charter members to help maximize the potential of this community. In my mind, that’s worth a hefty discount.

2. I want to make sure that current subscribers to this daily e-letter have the opportunity to get a better deal than everyone else. We’ve been having these conversations for over a year, and I know that you understand how important these topics are.

Soon after launch, we’ll open the doors to the general public, but they won’t get the same deal that you will… not by a long shot.

As part of going “all-in” with this publication, we’re going to invest a lot of money into growing the community and spreading the message. With some hard work and a bit of luck, we’ll end up building a very large, valuable, vibrant community.

As an added bonus, I’ve just confirmed that we’re going to be able to give away 100 copies of Terry Coxon’s very popular eBook ‘Unleash Your IRA’ along with the companion report ‘Roth Conversion Strategies that Can Save 30% in Taxes’ to the first 100 charter subscribers to Sovereign Man: Confidential.

Unleash Your IRA sells for $97 and the Roth Conversion report sells for $85. If you’re one of the first 100 to join Sovereign Man: Confidential, you’ll get these free.

We plan to open the doors to Sovereign Man: Confidential within the next ten days. If you want special notification of when we launch to make sure you have the opportunity to be among the first 100 and take advantage of Charter Member pricing, you can sign up for early notification here.

    Simon,

I’m curious how the Retirement experts feel about comments made by administration Czars regarding significant changes to 401k, ira, and social security and the possibility of requiring the holding of US Treasuries?

I agree, networks are invaluable. They served me well in keeping employed in the overseas job market over the past nearly 40 years. And maintaining the connections through email and several overseas trips a year have enabled me to help three kids find overseas employment. A second generation pass-along! Not bad for an activity that is enjoyable and personally enriching, actually kind of a hobby!

    Simon,

Very happy with the price point chosen and excited to join the community. I'm sure that this community would be worth well more than the $1,000 per month you had mentioned earlier, however at this price point it enables some of the younger members with less savings like myself, to join. Excited to hear more soon!

    Hi Simon!

I know I said I'd be quiet; but, I had to comment on the new price point. I was very happy to see that you lowered it from the original idea by 60 %. That's just GREAT!

The Charter Members discount of 30 % is also very nice.

Thanks for listening! I'm sure this will make the service available to many more people who are genuinely interested in this topic.

I'm anxiously looking forward to opening day and feel like a kid on a long car trip – “Are we there yet?!

Since I've recently moved overseas, I've been writing up a little “Ex-pat guide” for a few other like-minded people I knew back in the U.S. (and to possibly make into an eBook that might generate some revenue for me in the future). However, in the spirit of community, I'll add what I currently have to the forums once I join.

I was going to send this question, but got an auto reply that “is email account is no longer monitored by our support staff” and that I could pay to ask Simon a question. As you can see, that doesn't help me. Perhaps being poor means I don't belong in this community. . .
    Dear Mr Black,
I have enjoyed your Sovereign Man emails over the last few months. My husband & I have our house on the market because our business has had no income since May. We are literally living off our stocks, selling them as we need to pay bills. My dad & I are traveling to Ecuador in October to look at real estate there. I would love to be a charter member of your new community, but cannot afford it just now. Will you continue with this free newsletter?
    Thanks,

Simon…..I appreciate you are by necessity US centric, so may I volunteer my services as a British, and slightly alternative PT, in the upcoming forum, to which I will be of course eager to subscribe.

  • Jeff

This is definitely something I need to work on more. I've been so focused these past few years on becoming as self-sufficient and self-reliant as possible, that I've overlooked the importance of forging and strengthening valuable relationships. Thanks for the reminder.

    Simon,
What you're setting out to do with Sovereign Man: Confidential is a wonderful service to your readers and I hope you're met with wild success and positive feedback to encourage you along the way.

Bill Whittle wrote a wonderful essay several years ago called “Tribes,” that feeds into the concept of the 'trusted network' that you laid out for us.

First, building that trusted network can be a long, slow process, but it is perhaps the most important aspect of living a good Life on this planet and achieving that self-reliance for which we are striving.

Secondly, if you have never read Whittle's piece, you should do so. Here's a link to it on his Eject! Eject! Eject! blog:
    http://pajamasmedia.com/ejectejecteject/2009/10/07/tribes-2/

    All the best,
    Jason

P.S. Perhaps another time when you're in Dallas we can coordinate a meeting with a group of Casey Research “Phyles” that call North Central Texas home.

  • selfreliant1

I agree that trusted networks of people with varied skills and resources are a must for a self-reliant community. Where I live, in a rural area, there happens to be such a developing community. We have been working on this informally for several years. We have people that we bring in to teach special skills, such as primitive first aid and animal tracking. We know local people who have lots of gardens and small farms with organic veggies, people who are engineers and can build almost anything, people who raise goats or cattle or rabbits, people who understand how to get an alternative currency going, people who know how to tan hides, etc. We are not wealthy here, but to the extent they can do so, people are putting in rainwater catchment, solar and wind power, and preparing for whatever may come. Without a varied group of trusted people, you will not likely survive a long time if chaos emerges for some reason (currency collapse, rioting people whose handouts have stopped, geological upheaval, or whatever.) Better to be prepared than sorry.

  • linda

I have enjoyed your newsletter the last several months and have learned a lot. Although at the moment my husband and I do not plan to leave the country, it is always a possibility.

The private community is a wonderful idea. Would members be allowed to post their services as well? I would think that fostering more support within the “family” and it would help others be and stay independent in their businesses. Just a thought!

  • Quantella O.

    Dear Simon,

God, I thought I was feeling badly enough about how certain aspects of my life were going and then I opened your email today. Bam! Pow! Now, I know I feel even worse. A few years ago I lost everything and was homeless with no job, no clothes and no money. I spent a few nights on the street and then I spent a month in the home of a family member whom I have never really gotten along with…the worst month of my life. Although, to be fair, she didn't have to take me in…. I then volunteered for a few months because they offered room and board and access to computers, phones etcetera in exchange for four hours of work a day. After I left there, I called an old friend who works in another state and asked if I could trade labor for room and board. So now for the past four years, I've been cooking, cleaning and doing laundry. I've been lucky in that our friendship has become a relationship, but I struggle with the inequity caused by the fact that I don't make any actual money and labor does not compare to cold, hard cash. I am not used to having to ask before I buy or do something…I've supported myself with my own jobs since I was 14. I've never been a sex worker, a drug dealer or anything else that involves taking advantage of the weakness in another person. I have never been on Section 8, but unfortunately, while I was homeless for those 3 months I was on food stamps. I have had deal after deal meet some “mysterious” interference and the very people who shouldbe helping me are the same ones making everything worse. I admit to feeling “What the Hell is the point???? I am battered and while things are better, until I am actually making money, things will still not be right. I am starting to wonder: If everyone is so intent on fascism and the road to serfdom, doesn't my standing out just give them somewhere to aim??? I'm not sure. I have always been ” a rugged individualist,” not really interested in groups or teams or group think. I am never going to change, but I am having trouble figuring out how I'm supposed to accomplish my goal of financial self-sufficiency while being spied on and interfered with…..I suppose there is away and if I were smarter or more crafty, I'd have already figured it out. But I haven't yet….hopefully soon.

I really just wanted to write to you and thank you for your great posts. Everyday, I get another glimpse of the things I've lost and hope to one day recover. Unfortunately, I won't be able to join the inner circle just yet, but maybe I will be able to soon.

    Thanks,

    Quantella Owens,

    Simon,

Thank you so much for the price point on the premium service! Even though I have been umemployed for over 4 months, I will find a way to subscribe to this service. I am in the process of listing “stuff” on Craigslist to “lighten the load”, and simplify my life even further. I have been thinking about being more self sufficient for several years. I had been looking for other employment for several years before I was laid off, and met with no success whatsoever. I am the “poster child” for being overly educated and under skilled. And, because I am 62 yrs old, I know that age descrimination exists in the work place. So, my goal has been to become what I call “creatively self-unemployed”. In other words, not depending on an employer to determine my income or my future. I have 40 yrs worth of knowledge, education and experience in nutrition, health and wellness, and am looking into the possibility of becoming certified and licensed in some area of health, wellness or the periphery of the medical field. That should be a transportable skill I could use in multiple locations. Thank you, Simon, for creating this forum for those of us who are not satisfied with the status quo.

  • Sloopyjoe

    Simon,

I will be out of the country until Sep 30, 2010 and would like to sign on as a charter member. I will have limited internet access. How can I make this happen?

    • Linda

And same for me Simon. I will be up in Canada but will be in dawn to dusk classes that last into the wee hours of the morning….with barely enough time to breath before we begin early next morning So I won't be able to jump on your offering ASAP in a timely fashion. What are my options? Oh by the way thanks mucho for your efforts.

  • Jocelyn

I love the concept of community that resonates throughout today's article. It's something I am always searching for & an extremely important thing to maintain. I have met like-minded people all over the world as well, sometimes incredible so! My travel experience is limited, but I hope to start on the road next month, turning my lifestyle into a nomadic one. It seems like an ambitious task, & like nothing I've ever done before, but I'm confident with my choice & preparation.

I am looking forward to exploring residency & citizenship in South America via your free newsletter & maybe your premium service. It sounds like an amazing opportunity but I haven't decided if I am going to go for it yet.

No doubt we'll hear from you soon! Thanks for all that you do.

  • http://the-amazing-alexander-technique.com Forrest

    Simon,
You suggested we tell you how we are declaring our independence in the Age of Turmoil.
We are beginning our second week of a month-long fact-finding trip to Panama. We have multiple priorities. As teachers of the Alexander Technique it is important to us to be where prospective pupils are. For our profession, that means a large enough number of folks who can afford our modest fees. Our services are life-changing and not break-the-bank expensive. However, few people know this work and it is very difficult to explain. That means we will plan to have a modest practice, not one that brings riches. We love this work. We discovered it a bit later in life than we would have preferred, but are committed to practicing as long as we are able.
As important as our work is, income is also important. So, along with our chosen calling I am learning to build websites that sell and expect to help small businesses market themselves on the web. I will structure this to build an ongoing income stream so that it isn't just a J-O-B (I can't even say the word).
Last year we moved some funds to a Gold Money account and this year took coins off-shore.
So we are making some baby steps which we will continue to do.
We have not begun a second passport strategy, but will pursue that soon. As persons of modest means we are a bit staggered by the costs we have seen. Perhaps building a substantial income stream will change my perspective on that.
Please add me to the list of those thanking you for the reasonable price you have put on your new service.

    • Veritabletruth

Forest: Brasil and Argentina have trainings and communities, as well as a 'market' for many alternative therapies, such as feldenkrais, c-s therapy, bowen, constellation work, etc. Plus, big Waldorf school communities [brasil and colombia especially there], which are communities open to work like alexander technique.

Sounds as though you set set on Panama, but just wanted to mention to you-in case you want to explore other options.

    Simon,

You are awesome, and the price breaks down to ONLY $23 per month, which would be money well spent, just for the conference call alone! I am sure that you will use one of those services where we all dial into a certain phone number, of a company that will host the call for you.

You will probably start the calls off with a twenty or thirty minute talk, and then you will probably open up the lines for questions. Most decent conference calls usually last a couple of hours, and I am confident that yours will be extraordinary!

Although I am also faced with financial difficulties at the moment, and don't know how I will ever afford the membership at this time…as they say…

    “Where there's a will, there's a way!”

My wholesale pepper sprays come from a much larger supplier, and that gentleman used to have a monthly conference call, with all of his customers; people who own gun stores, other smaller wholesalers, and retailers, and these calls were so awesome…I would never miss a call!

Of course, your calls will be so much more interesting and intense, because there are so many topics that you will be discussing with your listeners/callers!

This conference call feature alone, is well worth the measly $23 per month, which is less than a dollar a day! That's less than a can of Coca-Cola TM from a vending machine!

Thanks for making it affordable to those of us who have been following you for days, weeks, or many months!

They often talk about being “in the right place at the right time,” well…those of us who sign-up for YOUR awesome Premium Membership will soon benefit such that, we will REALLY feel as though we were in The Right Place AT The Right Time!

Your service WILL be changing people's lives! I am certain of it! I am also a self-help writer and motivational speaker, and can spot an awesome opportunity when I see one!

Best Of Luck & Many Blessings!

    Father Time

One more thought…when a bunch of people with a commonality get together on a conference call, they are able to share ideas, and just as everyone takes away some good ideas, when they leave the conference call…everyone brings some interesting input to the table as well!

For example…there will be successful people, such as Simon Black and his colleagues, and everyone wants to hear what they have to say. But there are also others, who have taken a lifetime of learning and experiences, and they are currently in the process of distilling down this knowledge and these life experiences into something grand, even though they may not have arrived as of yet!

Also, for those who have always wanted to have their own website, to make money from home, outside of a J.O.B. which stands for Just Over Broke…

I have found an awesome company that will give you your own website, pre-stocked with 4,000 cool gift items, and they will drop ship for you through a company in California. You can use a FREE PayPal account to do your payment processing for you, and then you can use that PayPal account to pay the wholesaler who will drop ship the items to your customers.

The website is ONLY fifty bucks a month!

Even though they ONLY ship within the USA, you could probably be living anywhere in the world, and still have one of these websites, and simply target your prospects in the USA. You can have a PayPal debit MasterCard, and that can be used anywhere!

This is just one of numerous ways a person can make money online! Click my name above to learn more about this!

In fact, for those who are not aware, most of these comments have a link when you click the person's name…leading you to a huge wealth of information, this is just a small sampling of what will be available to you through Simon's conference calls once he gets those rolling!

Many of us will be so excited that we will have trouble falling asleep after an intense conference call with Simon and the gang!

“The person who says it cannot be done, should not interrupt the person who is doing it.” – ancient Chinese proverb

    • Linda

I read your comments and offering of your link. Thanks for sharing. And I would love to add that I appreciate your candor in stating up front that this service only delivers in the US.

Now for someone trying to live freedom in all ways, that limitation kind of defeats the purpose of having your business. What happens if you plan small for the US market only……but after 6 months your biz takes off like a wild horse. Then you are handicapped. And you start scrambling to look for a solution whilst losing international clients.

My point is to set your internet business up to be as accomodating as possible. One that that spans time and space and currencies. If anything find one that has layers or tiers of service…..maybe start with the US but has options to add other markets over time.

    • Guest

You should state clearly this is your affiliate link when people click on your “name”, that is, you will make money when people join through your link. The URL is http://www.myshopkart.net/, sid=413&rid=14475 is the session ID and Referral ID.

Just having a website means nothing. There are zillions of websites in the cyber space collecting dust. How people will find you is the key. Either through paid methods (e.g. ads – offline or online) or free traffic, aka organic traffic. For organic traffic, you need to know SEO skills (Search Engine Optimization) – both On-Page SEO and Off-page SEO (that is building lots and lots of links to your website) to show up on the 1st page of search engine results. Unless people search Google or Yahoo with keywords and your website shows up on the first page (that's right, first page, 10 spots), you won't have (many or any) sales while you are paying the monthly or even yearly membership fees. So you need to learn how to research keywords, what tools to use, how to find the “nugget” keywords with high search volumes, low competition, etc. etc. You may also want to learn how to use video marketing, article marketing, Press Release marketing, social media marketing, etc. etc. in order to have enough traffic to your website to convert leads to customers.

Without those skills, just having a website, it'll be your wishful thinking to make (good) money from a pre-designed drop shipping website (do they know how to do SEO and backlinks???) and paying membership fees.

  • BW

“One of my primary goals is to facilitate people making connections based on shared values”.

The new subscription service sounds like it's going to be great. I read a number of forums for expats on the internet (like EFAM) and I get value from all of them, depending on what info I'm seeking. With the kind of interest and responses I've seen here, as well as what is being offered and in the works for the future, it could become quite an international “watering hole”, heh, with a lot of potential for all those who can contribute and make practical use of it. I very much look forward to membership, even though I know I won't be immediately ready to take advantage of all the offerings which will be available. Preparation for manana.

This is a very good deal. I know the offer will be overdelivered since Simon has worked very hard for 17 months putting lot of thoughts and showing compassion for us to learn and understand what we can do to become more self-reliant.

    Very wise words, Simon!
After searching and thinking and wondering for many years, I feel very strongly that in the freedom/ independence/ expat community, I have found my proper tribe.
Being introverted and a bit shy by nature, networking is not effortless for me (though I can thoroughly enjoy it), but the impression I get from most of the people hanging out here is that they value substance and integrity over glibness. This makes me feel more excited and confident than usual about the idea of getting to know people and building a network, because it feels like my strong points will be more appreciated and my weak points will be less relevant than in society at large.
So I am seriously interested in joining the premium service and think it will be awesomely great value for the price. My only problem is that I've been very hand-to-mouth in terms of cashflow lately, running on the smell of an oily rag so to speak, and only if a miracle happens in the next few days would I be able to cough up the cash all at once. Would you consider making availble an option to spread out payment over time? It would make all the difference in the world to me.

Thank you Simon. I am looking forward to your new premium service. Will the special $277 be a special rate for only the first year or will this be our rate as along as we are a subscriber?

Chase.com has been down for over 24 hours. They STILL refuse to allow customers to use secure passwords (special characters, a major component of good passwords, are not allowed by Chase.com). What will it take until they wake the F up?!

I am very excited to finally have an opportunity to become part of a group feels the way I do. Thank you Simon!! There are so many newsletters that I would consider “doom and gloom.” But your daily letters are so refreshing and keeps everything so simply.

I look forward to the premium service so we can trade ideas and help each other make decisions that are right for each individual.

My only question is this: Will there be a way for me to connect with other like-minded people from my area of northeast Alabama? I believe it would be helpful to get to actually meet with others from your website.

    Thanks,

    David
